How well do iron on T-shirt transfers work?

Im on a tight budget & I like to give gifts to all of my friend’s children for Christmas. This year, I was thinking of making personalized designs, with their name, on the computer & printing them out on the iron on T-shirt transfer paper that is available & putting them on shirts to give as gifts. But I’m wondering how well these hold up. I don’t want to spend a lot of time doing this, only for the transfers to peel off after the first time the shirts are worn. Anyone who has experience with washing T-shirts w/iron on transfers, please answer, so I know if this would be worth my time or not. Thank you, in advance

I don’t know about the iron on transfers that you make your self but the ones you can buy are normally good if used correctly. But the reason I am answering is because a good way to keep iron on transfers from peeling from the edges is to take fabric paint and trace the outline of it. It helps to seal it and it adds to the picture I think.
Also you should always wash the t-shirt first so that if it shrinks it won’t ruin the transfer, or bleed. You could place a wash cloth over the transfer when you iron it to help from burning it.
