How do you remove iron-on appliques from fabrics?

There is this iron-on applique that I would like to remove from my skirt – which should be made from polyester/cotton. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Apply heat from the reverse side (iron set to poly/cotton) and peel – it will leave a mark though!
